Ham Wood

Walk into Ham Wood and you're immediately surrounded by proper old-growth beech and oak - the kind of forest that makes you forget Petersfield is just down the road. It's not vast, but it doesn't need to be. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, dappled light filters through the canopy, and there's a genuine sense of being away from it all, which is rare this close to town.

This is fundamentally a place for walkers and anyone after a bit of peace rather than structured entertainment. The paths wind through the trees without much fanfare - no visitor centre, no themed trails, just woodland as it should be. You'll find it most rewarding during autumn when the leaves turn, though spring bluebells are reason enough to return. Allow an hour to ninety minutes if you want to move at a leisurely pace and actually notice things.

If you're camping nearby - Woodlands Camping is barely three miles away - Ham Wood makes an ideal morning walk before packing up, or an evening stroll to stretch the legs. It's also close enough to Hampshire Hills if you're after a bit more organised base. Neither requires a huge commitment, which is the point of it really.

The wood isn't advertised as some grand attraction, and that's its strength. Kids who like climbing on fallen trees and poking about in undergrowth will enjoy themselves; those wanting a specific destination or playground will feel it's a bit thin. For a quiet half-day immersion in Hampshire woodland without the crowds, though, it's hard to fault.
