Ham Hill Country Park

The hill itself rises sudden and golden from the Somerset flatlands near Crewkerne, topped with the remains of an Iron Age fort that's genuinely impressive once you're up there. Ham Hill Country Park is essentially a proper outdoor space where you can wander through parkland, climb up to the ancient earthworks, and spread a blanket for lunch with decent views across the county. The stone quarried here centuries ago built half of Somerset, which adds a bit of texture to what could otherwise be just another walk up a local hill.

It's a solid spot if you're staying at somewhere like Esme's Escape or Thorney Lakes - maybe a twenty-minute drive depending where you're based - and you're after something low-key that doesn't demand hours of commitment. Families with young kids will find the walk manageable, though the path up can be a bit muddy in winter. Serious fort enthusiasts might spend an hour properly examining the ramparts; casual visitors with a picnic will do it in half that time.

Go on a clear day and the views justify the effort. Go when it's raining and you'll wonder why you bothered. Admission's free and there's no time restriction, so you can linger as long as you fancy. It's not a destination on its own, but paired with a caravan holiday in the area it fills a gap nicely - the kind of place you stumble across and think, right, that was worth the detour.
