Hallowscream is York's seasonal horror-themed park that transforms into a full-on fright fest once autumn rolls around. Think haunted mazes, scare attractions, and the kind of jump-scares that'll have you grabbing your mate's arm whether you like it or not. The whole thing's designed to unsettle - proper theatrical stuff with actors and effects rather than just dodgy props in a shed.

This is squarely for teenagers and adults who actually want to be terrified. Kids under about 13 will either love it or spend the entire time clutching a parent, depending on their constitution. If your group includes horror fans, it's worth the trip from York itself - only a short drive. Wimps should probably give it a miss.

You're looking at a good couple of hours minimum if you want to do it properly, maybe more if queues build up. Timing matters - go on a quieter weeknight rather than a packed weekend if you want to actually move through the attractions without standing around bored.

It works nicely as a standalone evening out if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Wigwam Holidays Ball Hall Farm and Acorn Glade Glamping York are both within easy striking distance and offer proper accommodation without the faff of a hotel. Pair it with a daytime visit to York itself, which has genuinely good streets and the Minster, and you've got a proper autumn break sorted.
