Halliggye Fogou

You're standing in a field near Mabe, Cornwall, staring down at what looks like two stone-lined tunnels disappearing into the earth. This is Halliggye Fogou - a proper Iron Age underground chamber that's been here for roughly 2,000 years. The locals won't tell you much about it, mainly because there isn't much written down, but what we do know is that the Cornish dug these things into hillsides for reasons historians still debate. Storage? Shelter? Ritual space? Take your pick.

Walking into one of these fogous is genuinely eerie. The passage is low - you'll be ducking - and damp, with stone walls pressing in on either side. It's the kind of experience that makes you realise how confined Iron Age life could be, even when you're voluntarily climbing into the thing. You can't go far before it's blocked off, but that's enough to get the measure of it.

History buffs will find this properly satisfying. Families with younger kids might struggle with the claustrophobia aspect, though older ones could manage it fine. The site is free and accessible more or less year-round, though winter mud is genuinely thick here.

It sits well within a broader Cornish archaeology trail. If you're based at The Secret Garden Glamping just up the road, you could easily slot this in between days exploring nearby stone circles and burial grounds. Don't expect visitor facilities or interpretation - bring a torch, wear proper boots, and accept that you're doing this on your own terms.
