Hallgreen Wood

Dense woodland that feels properly remote despite being within walking distance of Stonehaven. Hallgreen Wood is the sort of place where you actually hear silence - no shop chatter, no traffic noise, just trees and the occasional bird call. The forest floor is thick with moss and fallen branches, paths wind through old growth that's been here far longer than most of us will be around. It's straightforward walking territory without any fancy signposting or visitor infrastructure, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might find it a touch dull after twenty minutes - there's no playground, no water feature, no "attraction" in the theme-park sense. But if you've got teenagers or adults who actually enjoy just being in a wood without distraction, it's worth the trip. The paths are manageable year-round, though winter mud can be grim. Allow an hour to properly explore without rushing.

Free entry, naturally. No facilities that we could find, so bring water. It pairs well with a caravan break at either Cloak Caravan Park or Upper Crawton Park, both highly rated and within easy reach. You'd base yourself for a few nights, do Hallgreen Wood on a quieter morning before the coastal attractions get rammed. Stonehaven itself - with its fishing harbour and clifftop walks - is close enough that you could bundle them together. The wood works best as a breather from busier days, not a destination in itself.
