Buxie Hill

The walk up Buxie Hill from Stonehaven takes about forty minutes if you're reasonably fit, and the effort pays off with views that stretch across Aberdeenshire toward the coast. It's not a dramatic peak - you won't find jagged ridges or Alpine drama here - but the moorland approach has a proper wild feel to it, especially when the weather turns. The summit itself sits around 800 metres, high enough to give you genuine perspective over the Mearns and down toward Dunnottar Castle in the distance.

Walkers will find this straightforward and rewarding. There's no scrambling involved, which means families with older children can manage it without fuss. The path is reasonable and well-trodden. If you're staying at Upper Crawton Park or Cloak Caravan Park - both only a few miles away - this makes an excellent half-day outing to break up the holiday routine.

Timing-wise, allow two to three hours return if you're moving at a moderate pace and want to linger on top. Early morning visits catch the best light over the water. Summer's your safest bet for weather, though even then Scottish moorland has a habit of throwing mist at you without warning.

It's not a mountain for the peak-bagging adrenaline junkies, but it's exactly the sort of walk that reminds you why Scotland's landscape feels proper special. The views down to Stonehaven and the Aberdeenshire coast are worth the climb.
