Hailsham Free Church

The building itself is Victorian - all red brick and proper chapel austerity, sitting quietly on the Hailsham high street without fuss or fanfare. It's the kind of place you'd walk past without thinking twice unless someone told you to stop and look. But if you're camping nearby at Warren Wood or Fontmills Farm, and you've got an interest in 19th-century nonconformist architecture, it's worth a quick detour.

Free Church means it was independent from the established church - a big deal in the 1800s. The interior, from what you can glimpse through the windows if it's not open, keeps that stripped-back, no-nonsense feel typical of the period. No ornate stonework or stained glass theatre. Just solid, functional Victoriana.

You're really only looking at twenty minutes here, maybe half an hour if you're the type to linger and read every plaque. It works best as a breather during a wider Sussex ramble - Pevensey itself, with its castle ruins, is barely three miles away and offers far more substantial entertainment. If you're staying at one of the local holiday parks - Horam Manor or Golden Cross aren't far - and you're keen on period buildings, pop in. But don't rearrange your itinerary for it. It's the kind of modest spot that makes sense when you're already in the area, not a reason to be in the area in the first place.
