Hadleigh Castle

The ruins of Hadleigh Castle sit on a ridge overlooking the Thames estuary, and it's worth the short drive from Benfleet to see them. What you get is a proper medieval stronghold reduced to crumbling flint walls and a couple of towers - the kind of place where you can actually feel the centuries pressing down. Built in the 1360s, it's never been particularly grand, which oddly makes it more interesting than some showpiece castles.

The site itself is small. You can walk the perimeter in twenty minutes, poke around the towers, read the information boards, and take in the views across the estuary. Kids will find it passable for a short scramble about the ruins, though there's not much to keep them occupied beyond climbing and spotting where arrow slits used to be. History enthusiasts will appreciate the authentic decay - no restoration theatre here, just the real bones of the thing.

It's free to wander the grounds, which helps. Allow an hour if you're thorough, less if you just want the views and a quick look round. Go on a clear day if you can - the Thames stretch is actually rather lovely when the light's right. Winter can feel desolate out there, which suits the atmosphere fine.
