Haddon Lake

The water here is deceptively calm, ringed by mature trees that catch the light in strips of green and shadow. Haddon Lake sits just east of Peterborough, a proper slice of the Cambridgeshire countryside that doesn't shout about itself. It's a working gravel pit turned nature reserve - the kind of place that rewards a slower pace rather than a quick visit.

Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from it. The path around the lake takes a good hour or so depending on your mood, and the water attracts everything from grebes to the occasional rare visitor that gets the twitchers excited. You're not scrambling up peaks or ticking off obvious landmarks - it's about noticing the small things. Dragonflies in summer. The way the light changes across the water at different times of day. Families with younger children might find it a bit underspectacular after twenty minutes, but teenagers who aren't glued to their phones will likely enjoy it.

Both Ferry Meadows Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite (2.7 miles away) and Nene Outdoors (3.2 miles) work well as bases if you're planning a longer stay. Ferry Meadows gets the edge with its facilities and five-star rating, though both put you within easy reach of the lake for an evening walk before tea.

Access appears free, and there's no formal opening hours that I could pin down - it's one of those places you simply turn up to. Go early in the day if you want any sense of solitude. Late afternoon light on the water is lovely, but you'll have company.
