Haddo Chapel

The chapel sits alone in the grounds of Haddo House, a few miles south of Ellon, and it's one of those places that stops you mid-walk. Built in the 1880s by the Earl and Countess of Aberdeen, it's a proper Victorian statement - all soaring Gothic Revival with intricate stone work and stained glass that catches the light just so. You can actually step inside if it's unlocked, which it often is, and the interior is surprisingly intimate for something so formally designed.

This isn't a major pilgrimage site, and that's rather the point. It works brilliantly as part of a wider visit to Haddo House itself - the National Trust for Scotland property that surrounds it - where you can spend a proper afternoon wandering the walled garden and the rooms beyond. If you're staying at Ythan Valley Campsite nearby, it's an easy leg-stretch, though the walk from the car park adds another fifteen minutes or so.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the craftsmanship, and the quietness appeals to anyone after a moment's peace rather than a tourist box-tick. Kids will find it less compelling than, say, a castle with towers, but the chapel's solitude and those stained glass windows tend to leave an impression. Allow twenty minutes to poke about inside and the grounds, longer if you're the type to sit and sketch or just absorb the atmosphere. Free to visit, and best in late afternoon when the light's at its best.
