Hackhurst Downs

Dense woodland spreads across these rolling hills south of Leatherhead, offering proper Surrey countryside without the weekend crowds of Box Hill. The ancient beech and oak forest feels surprisingly wild for somewhere so close to the M25, with muddy bridleways threading between the trees and glimpses of the North Downs through the canopy.

Walkers will find plenty to explore here, though the paths can be boggy after rain and some of the routes aren't brilliantly signposted. Families with young children might struggle with the uneven terrain, but older kids who don't mind getting their boots dirty will love scrambling about in the woods. Dog walkers have the run of the place.

The downs connect nicely with longer walks towards Norbury Park, making this a good warm-up if you're staying at one of the nearby camping spots like Embers at Polesden Lacey or the Horsley Camping and Caravanning Club Site. Budget a couple of hours if you want to do a proper circuit, though you could easily spend longer if the weather's decent. No facilities here, so bring water and snacks. Free to roam, naturally, and best avoided on muddy winter days unless you fancy proper country walking boots.
