Gypsy Brae Recreation Ground

The path down to Gypsy Brae winds through scrubby woodland before opening onto a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight. You get decent views across the Firth of Forth from the upper parts, and the ground itself is a mix of grassland and gorse - the kind of place where you actually spot things rather than just walk through it.

It's walkers and birdwatchers who'll get the most from this. The terrain is gentle enough for families, though younger kids might lose interest once they've reached the viewpoint - it's not a destination in itself, more a worthwhile detour if you're based around Burntisland. The reserve has that Scottish east-coast character: windswept, a bit rough at the edges, nothing manicured about it.

Free to wander, no visible facilities or entry fees to worry about. Allow an hour if you're taking your time with binoculars; half that if you're just after the views and a quick walk. Spring and early summer are best for spotting migrants and nesting birds.

If you're staying at Pettycur Bay Holiday Park just down the road, Gypsy Brae works well as a morning outing before hitting the coast properly. It's close enough that you won't spend the afternoon driving, but far enough removed that it feels like an actual expedition rather than a park lap.
