Walk into Gusted Hall Woods and you're immediately surrounded by proper woodland - the kind with tall oaks, rough paths, and the sort of quiet that makes you realise how little of this is left in Essex. It's a nature reserve near Benfleet, and while it won't blow your mind with scale, it's a genuinely decent spot for an hour's wander if you're camping nearby.

You'll find yourself on well-trodden trails through dense tree cover. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birds - woodpeckers and nuthatches are about if you're patient enough. The woodland floor changes with the seasons, which is half the appeal. In spring the bluebells do their thing. Summer's just green and quiet. Autumn's when it properly comes alive with fungi and leaf litter.

This works best for families who want to burn off energy without a steep climb, or for anyone after a proper nature fix without the motorway drive. Kids will find enough to explore - fallen logs, a real forest feel - but it's not a destination in itself. Forty minutes to an hour and you've seen what it offers.

The reserve is free to access, though opening hours can be vague depending on the season.
