Gunton Meadow

Walk out onto Gunton Meadow on a decent morning and you'll understand why this corner of Suffolk matters. It's a proper working nature reserve just outside Lowestoft - the sort of place where you actually see things if you're paying attention, not just wander through hoping something interesting happens.

The meadow itself is flat and open, which means birdwatchers get decent sightlines across the wetland. You'll spot redshank, lapwing, and if you time it right around migration periods, things get properly interesting. The paths are straightforward enough - no scrambling about - so it's manageable for most fitness levels. Bring binoculars or a decent camera and you'll have a field day. Without them, it's still pleasant enough, but you won't get much from the distance.

This is absolutely a destination for wildlife enthusiasts and patient observers. If you're expecting manicured gardens or dramatic vistas, look elsewhere. If you want to stand in an actual working landscape and watch birds doing their thing, you're in the right spot.

The reserve works well as part of a longer coastal walk from either Pakefield Holiday Park or The Hollies - both within easy reach. Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about the birdwatching, or 45 minutes if you just fancy a straightforward walk. Best visited during spring and autumn migration when the reserve properly comes alive. Check opening times locally before you go - facilities information isn't always easy to pin down in advance.
