Gunhill Wood

Gunhill Wood is a proper Sussex woodland just outside Lewes, the sort of place locals know and visitors miss. It's genuine forest walking territory - mixed broadleaf and conifer, well-maintained paths, nothing fancy. You get a solid hour or two of quiet tramping depending on which route you take, with the sort of dappled light and woodland floor that makes you forget you're only minutes from the town.

It works best for families wanting an actual walk rather than a stroll, and for anyone who finds the South Downs a bit relentless. The trees provide decent shelter in rough weather too. Children who like spotting wildlife or building dens will find plenty to occupy them, though it's not a destination in itself - more a proper exercise stop when you're based locally.

I'd allow two hours minimum if you're planning to walk the full circuit rather than duck in and out. The woodland is free to access and there's parking nearby, though facilities are minimal. It sits just a short drive from several campsite options - Hale Farm and Fontmills Farm are virtually on the doorstep, making it an obvious add-on if you're staying in the area. Warren Wood Country Park offers similar woodland walking if you want alternatives, though it's further afield at five and a half miles.

Gunhill Wood won't win any awards for drama or distinctive features, but it's the kind of place you'll remember for the quiet and the smell of the forest floor rather than any single standout moment. Go on a weekday morning and you'll likely have it to yourself.
