Gryme's Dyke Middle

Walking through Gryme's Dyke Middle feels like stepping into Essex's wilder side - and that's saying something in a county known more for commuter towns than ancient woodland. This forest sits just east of Colchester, and it's the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss entirely.

The main draw here is the dyke itself, an Iron Age earthwork that runs through the trees like a raised spine. You can follow it for a decent stretch, and there's something oddly compelling about walking along a path that's been there for two thousand years. The trees close in around you properly - oak, beech, and birch mostly - so it feels properly isolated even though you're never far from civilisation.

Walkers will get the most out of it. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes or so unless they're genuinely into spotting earthworks and getting muddy. History enthusiasts will love tracing the dyke line and thinking about Iron Age tribes and territorial boundaries. Bring decent boots - it gets boggy in places.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that we could find, so come prepared. It's free to access and open whenever, which is typical for Essex woodland. Allow an hour or two depending on how thoroughly you want to explore the various paths branching off from the main dyke line.

Pair it with Colchester Country Park just 1.2 miles away if you're camping nearby - that gives you both woodland walking and a proper base for exploring the wider area.
