Gruffalo

The reserve follows a route inspired by Julia Donaldson's beloved children's book, so expect story markers and woodland sculptures dotted through the trees rather than a theme park experience. It's genuinely lovely - dense Scottish woodland with that satisfying mix of pine and birch, and the path meanders through without being too demanding. Most people allow an hour to ninety minutes, depending on how much time you spend hunting for the story elements or just soaking in the atmosphere. Free to visit, which is always a bonus. Families with primary-aged children will get the most out of it - the story element gives the walk purpose and keeps younger ones engaged. Older kids might find it a touch on the short side, though the woodland itself is worth exploring regardless. You could easily combine this with a stay at Ardtower Caravan Park just over a mile away, or base yourself at Go Glamping at Loch Ness if you want something with more creature comforts. The walk works in most weather, though it gets muddy after rain - proper waterproofs and decent boots worth bringing.
