Grove Wood

A proper woodland walk near Maidstone that actually delivers. Grove Wood is a genuine forest - dense trees, proper paths, the works - rather than the manicured nature reserves you sometimes get in the south-east. You're walking through beech and oak mainly, with dappled light filtering through in summer and that brilliant crunch underfoot come autumn.

It's ideal for walkers who want fresh air without faff. Families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground will find plenty to hold their attention - fallen logs to scramble over, streams to follow, the kind of small discoveries that keep children occupied. History types will get less from it than they would from the castles around Maidstone, so that's worth knowing upfront.

Allow an hour minimum, two hours if you're taking it easy. The paths are well-maintained but can get muddy after rain, which is half the charm if you ask me. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. No obvious entry fee either, which is refreshing.
