Grip of Gravel

The water at Grip of Gravel sits flat and grey most days, ringed by rough grassland that slopes down from the Nottinghamshire countryside. It's a proper working extraction lake - the sort of place you might stumble across while cycling between Newark and the surrounding villages, rather than somewhere you'd plan a special trip for.

What you get here is straightforward. The lake itself is decent for a walk round, and if you've got binoculars there's usually something worth watching - waders, the odd heron if you're lucky. The banks aren't manicured or anything; it feels like actual countryside rather than a visitor attraction pretending to be one. That's either its charm or its limitation, depending on what you want.

Families with young kids will probably exhaust it in under an hour. Keen birdwatchers, though, could happily spend a morning here. The walk is gentle enough and there's something satisfying about a lake that hasn't been turned into a theme park.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - BrackenXcapes or Milestone are both within easy driving distance of Newark - Grip of Gravel works as a half-day diversion rather than a main event. It's the sort of place you tag onto a bigger day out, not the reason you came to Nottinghamshire. Free to visit, naturally, and there's no formal infrastructure, so bring what you need. Go when it's not bleak, basically.
