Grimsbury Woodland Nature Reserve

Walk into Grimsbury Woodland and you're straight into proper ancient woodland - the kind where the canopy closes overhead and you can actually hear yourself think. It's a nature reserve in Northamptonshire, just a short hop from Oxford, and honestly it's the sort of place you stumble upon by accident and end up coming back to.

The woodland itself is thick with native trees and the undergrowth makes for decent wildlife spotting if you're patient. Bring binoculars and you might catch woodland birds, maybe a deer if you're lucky. It's not a dramatic landscape - no peaks or views across valleys - but there's something properly restorative about wandering the trails here. The paths are manageable and muddy rather than rocky, so families with reasonably mobile kids will get on fine, though it's less of a "keep the toddlers entertained for hours" kind of place and more of a "stretch your legs and breathe better air" situation.

Given it's a nature reserve, access should be free, though you'll want to check locally as details aren't always published online.
