The ruins of Greyfriars Church sit quietly in Leicester, a Franciscan friary that once mattered far more than most people realise today. What's left are fragments of stone walls and floor plans you can still make out if you know what you're looking at - enough to give you a sense of medieval religious life without requiring an archaeology degree to understand it.

This isn't a fully reconstructed showstopper. You're looking at genuine remains from the 13th century onwards, which means it rewards a bit of patience and historical curiosity. The church itself was suppressed during the Dissolution, naturally, and what survived has been carefully preserved rather than prettified. That's actually quite refreshing.

It works best for people who like history and don't mind reading plaques or doing a bit of research beforehand. Kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're already interested in medieval monasteries. Budget 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how much you want to linger. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Bradgate Park is your closest option at under five miles - Greyfriars makes a decent afternoon addition to a Leicester weekend rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with the city centre's Richard III visitor centre or a walk around the medieval streets, and you've got something worth doing. On its own, though, it's more for the keenly interested than casual tourists.
