Green's Wood

Walk through Green's Wood and you're in proper Ribble Valley territory - a stretch of ancient woodland just outside Clitheroe that feels a world away from the market town bustle. The woodland path winds through mixed trees with good underfoot conditions, making it more accessible than some of Lancashire's hillier routes. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which counts for something these days.

For families with younger kids, allow an hour or so. The paths are manageable and there's enough variety to keep things interesting without demanding a full day's commitment. Serious walkers might loop it into a longer route, but Green's Wood itself isn't the sort of destination you'd build a whole trip around. That said, it works beautifully as a half-morning outing if you're camping at Calder Farm just down the road - they're barely two miles away, which is handy.

The woodland does its job well. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right, and autumn colours are decent. Winter's fine too if you don't mind a bit of mud. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. The real draw is simply that it's genuine countryside without the crowds you'd get at bigger attractions, and from a holiday park base it offers a proper stretch of legs without faffing about with long drives. Clitheroe itself has more obvious attractions if you want them, but sometimes the best bit of a break is just wandering through trees.
