Green's Windmill and Science Centre

The windmill stands on Sneinton Dale like something from a different century - and it actually is. Built in 1807, Green's Windmill ground corn for the local area until the 1940s, and now it's been converted into a working museum that tells the story of both milling and the science behind it. You can climb up inside the thing, which is properly steep and narrow - not for the unfit or claustrophobic - but the views across Nottingham from the top make it worthwhile.

The Science Centre bit is what keeps it interesting beyond the initial novelty of old machinery. There are hands-on experiments scattered throughout, interactive displays explaining wind power and grain milling, and enough visual stuff to keep children engaged for a solid hour or two. It's not enormous, so don't expect to spend half a day here, but it works well as part of a broader Nottingham day out.

Admission isn't expensive, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of curiosity. History types will appreciate the industrial heritage angle, and families with primary-school-aged kids will find the interactive element keeps them from getting restless. The location near Holme Pierrepont Campsite and the other caravan parks just outside the city makes it a convenient stop if you're basing yourself in the area for a week. Head into the city proper for proper attractions, but the windmill is a solid half-morning activity when the weather's decent.
