Greenhill Covert

A decent patch of woodland between Shipston-on-Stour and the surrounding farmland, Greenhill Covert offers the kind of quiet forest walk that doesn't demand much of you but rewards a bit of exploration. It's proper woodland - old trees, leaf litter underfoot, the works - rather than a manicured nature reserve. You're looking at a straightforward ramble through mixed broadleaf and conifer, the sort of place where you might spot roe deer or just enjoy the sound of things rustling about in the undergrowth.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic landscape or rugged terrain, just a solid hour or so of forest, enough to clear your head without needing a packed lunch and proper boots. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull if they're after something more structured - there's no play equipment or interpretation boards to keep them entertained. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites like Aylesmore Farm Camping Ground or Cotswold Hills Country Park, it's well worth the drive for an afternoon outing.

The Shipston area itself is fairly quiet, more about the surrounding landscape than the town, so this covert works best as part of a broader walking day rather than a standalone destination. Free access, no facilities to speak of, and best visited in spring or summer when the woodland's actually doing something visually. Winter's grey and a bit dreary here.
