Greenfield Wood

The woodland around Greenfield feels properly remote, even though Dunoon is just down the road. You're walking through mature forest where the light filters through in that particular way that makes you forget what time it is. Scots pine, oak, and birch crowd the paths, and on a damp day the whole place smells like earth and decomposing wood in the best possible way.

It's the kind of place where walkers thrive. If you're after a casual stroll, you'll find easy trails threading through the trees. Properly keen hikers can push into rougher ground and rack up some decent distance. The woodland floor stays soft underfoot most of the time, which is either lovely or ankle-turning depending on how recently it's rained.

Families with older kids will get something from it - there's room to explore and the safety of trees means children can roam without you losing sight of them entirely. Younger ones might lose interest after an hour unless you're particularly good at spotting wildlife or you've brought a proper scavenger hunt prepared.

Access appears to be free, and there's no obvious time restriction, though clarity on formal opening arrangements is thin. Allow anything from 45 minutes for a quick walk to three hours if you want to cover serious ground. It's a solid half-day option if you're based at Glenfinart or Loch Eck, both within a short drive. Either caravan park makes a decent base for exploring this corner of Argyll, and Greenfield Wood is the kind of place that slots nicely between a beach trip and a loch walk.
