Greencastle

You'll find the ruins of Greencastle perched on a rocky outcrop just outside Newry, commanding views across the Newry River valley. It's a Norman castle that's seen better days - we're talking crumbling stone walls and tumbled masonry - but that's precisely what makes it worth a visit if you're into medieval fortifications.

The castle dates back to around 1305, built to control the river crossing and the surrounding lands. What remains is mainly the keep and fragments of the outer walls, enough to get a sense of its defensive layout without needing much imagination. The setting matters more than the structure itself - you get proper views across the countryside, and on a clear day it's the sort of place where you understand why someone built a fortress here in the first place.

This works best for history enthusiasts and walkers rather than young families after a theme park experience. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, just the ruins and the landscape. Allow thirty minutes to an hour depending on how much time you want to spend picking through the stones and taking photos.

It's free to access and open year-round, though the site can be muddy after rain so wear sensible shoes. If you're staying at any of the caravan parks nearby - Chestnutt and Cranfield are barely a mile away - it's a straightforward walk or short drive. Pop in on your way to or from the Mourne Mountains rather than making it a separate trip. It's solid but not unmissable.
