About Green Wood

There's a proper forest walk waiting just outside Oswestry that most people driving through Shropshire completely miss. Green Wood is a working woodland where you can actually see foresters at it - felling, coppicing, managing the place - rather than just wandering through some manicured nature reserve. The trees are thick and old, and on a grey day (which is most days) the light filters through in that particular way that makes you understand why people used to think forests were magic.

You can walk here for twenty minutes or three hours depending on mood and fitness. Bring proper boots - it's muddy even when it hasn't rained. There are informal paths but nothing signed or maintained like a country park, so it's more genuine than that, if a bit rougher round the edges. Free to access, as far as anyone can tell, though there's a working timber operation here so respect the fences and equipment.

It's ideal for anyone who wants a woodland walk without the tourist infrastructure - walkers will appreciate the genuine forest feel, and kids who like climbing things and getting mucky will have a field day. Families based at Cranberry Moss or Colemere Caravan Park nearby could easily spend a morning here before heading into Oswestry itself for lunch. Don't expect facilities or waymarking. Do expect actual trees doing what trees do.
