Green Hill

The walk up Green Hill rewards you with proper views across the Wiltshire countryside, rolling farmland stretching out in all directions once you've made it to the summit. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Cotswolds gets hysterical about - but there's something satisfying about reaching the top and being able to see for miles on a clear day.

The climb itself takes about twenty minutes from Ashurst, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath. It's manageable for reasonably active families, though younger legs might find it a bit of a slog. The real appeal here is the walk itself as much as the destination - the approach takes you through proper countryside rather than urban sprawl.

Worth doing if you're staying nearby, particularly at Green Hill Farm Holiday Village just down the road. It's the sort of place that works well as a morning activity before heading elsewhere - don't expect to spend hours up there. Go early to avoid the afternoon crowds if it's a weekend, and bring better weather than you think you'll need; Wiltshire winds can turn pleasant walks miserable fast.

Free to access, naturally. No facilities at the top, so sort yourself out before you leave the village. Decent spot for a packed lunch if the weather cooperates, and the views make for decent photographs if you're that way inclined.
