Green Hill

The walk up Green Hill rewards you with views across Winchester and the surrounding chalk downs - the sort of outlook that makes you understand why people have settled in this valley for millennia. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but the climb is straightforward enough and the panorama from the top justifies the effort, especially on a clear day when you can trace the water meadows spreading out below.

This is proper walking country rather than a tourist attraction in the conventional sense. You'll need decent boots if the ground's wet - it gets boggy in places - and allow a solid hour for the ascent and another for pottering about up top. The views themselves are free, naturally. Families with young legs will manage it fine; littler ones might find it tedious once they've reached the summit and there's nothing to climb on or explore. History enthusiasts get the added bonus of understanding the lie of Winchester itself, seeing how the old city sits in relation to the surrounding landscape.

Worth combining with a stay at Holden Farm Camping & Cafe, just three miles away - brilliant spot with proper facilities and a cafe on site. Beechen Glamping is another decent option if you want something with a bit more comfort. The walk sits perfectly within a wider Winchester and Test Valley exploration. Not a massive undertaking, but genuinely rewarding if you're already in the area and fancy stretching your legs properly.
