Green Hill

Green Hill offers one of those rare vantage points in Essex where you actually feel like you're somewhere elevated. It's hardly Alpine, but from the summit you get proper views across the flatlands toward Billericay and beyond - on a clear day there's real distance to it.

The walk up takes about fifteen minutes at a steady pace, which makes it manageable for families with younger legs, though the gradient's noticeable enough that you won't find toddlers zipping to the top. The path itself is well-trodden and straightforward. Most people spend twenty minutes on the summit taking photos, maybe sitting with a flask, then head back down. It's not a full afternoon's activity, but it slots in perfectly as a morning excursion if you're camping locally.

What makes it worth doing is the perspective it gives on the region. Essex gets a bad press for being flat and featureless, but standing up here you see the actual landscape rolling away - woods, fields, the patchwork of it all. Weather matters hugely. Rain or mist and you've got a short muddy walk to a viewpoint of bugger all. Bright morning though, and it's genuinely rather nice.

If you're staying at Barleylands Campsite just down the road, it's a no-brainer detour. Stuarts Wood's a bit further out but still within easy reach for a morning walk. Bring proper shoes - it gets boggy - and don't expect anything dramatic. What you get is a proper little Essex outing, the kind locals actually do on weekends.
