Greator Rocks

Greater Rocks near Newton Abbot is one of those Devon peaks that doesn't shout about itself, which is precisely why it's worth the climb. The summit offers proper expansive views across the South Hams and out toward Dartmoor - on a clear day you can see for miles, though the approach can be boggy and a bit steep depending on which route you take.

It's a walker's spot rather than a casual stroll, so bring decent boots. The granite outcrops themselves are striking once you're up there, giving you something to actually stand on rather than just gazing at fields. You'll likely have the place quieter than the honeypot peaks further up on the moor, which makes it a solid choice if you want views without the crowds.

Allow a couple of hours from the nearest car parking, depending on fitness and which path you choose. There's no visitor infrastructure at the top, so bring water and snacks. Summer's best, though autumn when the light's lower can be equally rewarding.

If you're based at Oakmoor Touring Park - the adults-only site five or so miles away - this makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing to break up a longer holiday. It slots nicely into a loop around Newton Abbot and the surrounding ridges if you're mixing peak walks with exploring the lower valleys.
