Great Wilbraham's gallery sits in a village that feels properly removed from Cambridge's tourist crush, even though it's barely five miles east. The space itself is modest - no grand Victorian building or sweeping staircases - but that's rather the point. This is where local artists and emerging talent get proper wall space, away from the commercial gallery circuit.

The shows rotate, so what you'll see depends entirely on when you visit. Some months it's contemporary painting, other times photography or sculpture. I've found the work here refreshingly unfiltered - you're not wading through the safe, gallery-approved stuff that gets recycled across every market town in England.

It works best if you're already spending time in the village or using it as a quiet pit stop between Cambridge visits. An hour is plenty; maybe ninety minutes if a particular exhibition grabs you. Families with teenagers interested in art will find it worth the detour. Younger kids might get bored within twenty minutes, if I'm honest.

If you're staying at Piggles Retreat or HappenOak Treehouse - both solid options within five miles - pop over on an afternoon when you fancy breaking up the park time. The village has a decent pub and the surrounding countryside is flat and easy for walking. The gallery itself is free to enter, though most places encourage a donation if you're hanging about.

Don't expect boutique London energy. Do expect to see work you wouldn't encounter elsewhere.
