Fulbourn Fen NR

The fen opens up in front of you like something from another era - no manicured paths here, just open water, reedbeds thick enough to lose yourself in, and a genuine sense that you've stepped outside civilisation. Fulbourn Fen is a working nature reserve just east of Cambridge, and it's the sort of place where you might actually see something rather than just walk past interpretive boards.

The reserve is genuinely flat - you're on the edge of the Fens proper - which makes it accessible for most people but also means there's nowhere to hide from the wind. Bring binoculars. Serious birders come here for the wintering wildfowl and breeding warblers in spring, but even if you can't tell a shoveler from a pintail, the raw emptiness of the landscape has its own appeal. The reedbeds are proper tall in summer, which creates that slightly otherworldly feel.

It's not a destination that'll keep young kids engaged for hours unless they're genuinely interested in birds or insects, but families with older children who like a straightforward walk will find it rewarding. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're stopping regularly to look. Access is free, though facilities are minimal - no café, no visitor centre, just nature doing its thing.

If you're based at HappenOak Treehouse or Piggles Retreat nearby, this works well as a morning activity before heading into Cambridge. It's different enough from the manicured parks to feel like a proper change of pace.
