Great war 1914-1918 WW2 1939-1945

There's something about standing on ground where history actually happened that makes the textbooks come alive. Surrey has several significant First and Second World War sites scattered across the county, and they tell the story of Britain during its darkest hours far better than any museum could.

The area around Farnham holds particular weight. You've got trenches, bomb sites, airfield remnants, and monuments dotted through the countryside - some obvious, others you'd walk straight past if you didn't know where to look. A lot of the heavy fighting and training happened here, and the landscape still bears the scars if you know what to look for. Walking through these places, you genuinely feel the weight of it.

Historynerds and anyone with a genuine interest in military heritage will find this properly rewarding. It's not a single tidy attraction with a visitor centre and a gift shop - it's more a case of doing some legwork, finding the sites, and standing there. That makes it feel more real, honestly. Families with older kids who've studied the wars at school might find it clicks into place when they're actually there.

Allow at least half a day if you're serious about it. Better still, combine it with walks through the Surrey countryside. Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat, just a few miles away, is an excellent base - proper facilities, and you're close enough to explore on foot. Spring and autumn are ideal, when the weather's decent but the sites aren't rammed with school groups.
