Great Treverbyn Lake

Clay mining has left Cornwall's landscape dotted with unexpected water features, and this sizeable lake near Penwithick is one of the more accessible examples. Great Treverbyn Lake sits in what was once an active china clay pit, creating a surprisingly deep body of water surrounded by white sandy shores that feel almost Mediterranean on a sunny day.

Fishing enthusiasts will find this a proper spot for a peaceful session - the lake's well-stocked with carp and other coarse fish. The walking is easy enough around most of the perimeter, though families with young children should keep a close eye as there are no barriers along the water's edge.

What makes this lake particularly appealing is its sense of space. Unlike some of Cornwall's busier beauty spots, you're unlikely to find crowds here, even in summer. The contrast between the bright white clay spoil heaps and the dark water creates an almost lunar landscape that's genuinely striking.

It's a decent shout if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Par or East Crinnis - about a 10-minute drive inland from the coast. Allow an hour or two for a gentle stroll and perhaps a picnic. The setting feels wild despite its industrial origins, making it an interesting alternative to Cornwall's more obvious lakeside attractions.
