Great Rock

The walk up to Great Rock from Newton Abbot takes you through proper Devon moorland - gorse, bracken, the lot. Once you reach the peak itself, the view across Dartmoor opens up in all directions, which on a clear day is genuinely worth the effort.

It's not a particularly technical climb, but the path can be boggy depending on the weather, so decent boots matter more than experience. Most people manage it in under two hours return, though you might want longer if you're planning to sit around and actually enjoy the view rather than just tick it off.

Walkers will absolutely get the most out of this one. The surrounding moorland has enough room to extend your walk if you fancy it, and the isolation is proper - no crowds here like you might get at some of the more famous Dartmoor spots. Kids can do it too, but they'll need to be the kind who enjoy walking without complaining, otherwise it's a bit of a slog.

If you're based at Oakmoor Touring Park just 2.6 miles away, this makes for a cracking morning out. The park is adults-only, so if you're after some proper peace and quiet in the evening and a decent hill walk during the day, you've got yourself a solid combination. Free to visit, obviously - it's moorland. Just bring a map and check the weather before you head out. Mist rolls in fast up there.
