Great Pool

Standing water stretches away through woodland west of Worcester, creating one of those unexpected pockets of calm that makes you wonder why more people don't know about it. Great Pool lives up to its name - this is a proper-sized lake that feels miles from anywhere despite being a short drive from the cathedral city.

Walkers will find the most to appreciate here. The footpaths that circle the water offer decent exercise without being too demanding, and the woodland setting means it's lovely even on overcast days. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of mud on their boots should enjoy it, though there's not much here for toddlers beyond feeding any ducks that might be about.

Fishing seems popular judging by the anglers I spotted on my visit, and the peace makes it obvious why. You won't find facilities or formal parking - this is very much a take-what-you-find sort of place. Allow a couple of hours if you want to walk the full circuit properly.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks near Worcester - Mill House Caravan Site or Twin Oaks Caravan & Camping are both within easy reach - Great Pool makes a pleasant morning out. Just don't expect anything too spectacular. It's the sort of spot that rewards those who appreciate quiet countryside rather than dramatic views.
