Great Knoutberry Hill

Great Knoutberry Hill rises unexpectedly from the limestone country south of Carnforth, offering proper fell-walking without the full Lake District commitment. It's not a huge summit - around 1,200 feet - but the views across Morecambe Bay and the Pennines justify the slog up. The approach is straightforward moorland walking, with decent paths most of the way, though your boots will find bog in places. Allow a good two hours for the round trip from the nearest car park off the Kirkby Lonsdale road.

Walkers get the most from this one. Families with young children will find it manageable but nothing special - the peak itself is a trig point, not a dramatic summit, so it lacks the drama that holds kids' attention. History buffs won't find much up there beyond the usual moorland stone walls. The real draw is the walk itself through proper Yorkshire fell country, away from crowds.

It's free, obviously - you just park and go. The best time is clear weather, when the visibility actually makes the effort worthwhile. Mist can roll in fast here, so check conditions before you set out. If you're staying at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby, this works as a good morning walk before lunch, though it's a bit of a drive from there. Worth doing if you're in the area for fell-walking, but don't make a special trip on its own.
