Great Fox Hill

The highest point in Essex isn't much of a mountain, but Great Fox Hill near Billericay gives you a proper sense of achievement if you're after a decent walk. Standing at 482 feet, it's the sort of summit that doesn't require climbing boots or serious fitness, which makes it ideal for families who want to say they've conquered a peak without the drama.

The climb itself takes about twenty minutes from the carpark, through woodland that's pleasant enough without being spectacular. The reward at the top is a decent vantage point across the Essex countryside - on a clear day you can see for miles, which isn't bad considering you're in the South East. It's not jaw-dropping, but it's worth the walk.

Don't expect crowds or facilities. There's no café, no visitor centre, just open space and views. The path can be muddy after rain, so proper shoes are essential. Most people spend thirty minutes to an hour here before heading back down.

It works well as part of a wider ramble around Billericay, and if you're staying at either Barleylands Campsite or Stuarts Wood Campsite nearby, it's an easy morning outing. Families with young children will manage it fine, though it's not thrilling enough to hold attention for hours. History buffs won't find much - just a hill, really. But if you want a gentle walk with a genuine peak at the end, Great Fox Hill delivers.
