Great Crabden Wood

Great Crabden Wood is a proper forest walk just outside Battle, the kind of place where you actually feel like you've left civilization behind. The woodland here is thick and ancient-feeling, with dense tree cover that keeps things cool even on warm days. You're walking through beech and oak mostly, with enough undulation to keep your legs engaged without being genuinely exhausting.

It's ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Beech Estate or Seven Acre Woods are practically on your doorstep - and need a few hours of proper forest air without having to drive far. The walks through here suit families with reasonably confident walkers; young children might find the paths a bit boggy in winter, but autumn is lovely when the leaf fall is thick underfoot. History buffs won't find obvious attractions, but you're in Battle country, so the weight of 1066 hangs over the whole region.

Allow two to three hours for a good circuit, depending on which paths you take. There's no formal visitor infrastructure that we could find - no car park, no facilities - so come prepared. The wood itself is free to roam, though it's worth checking locally if there are any seasonal closures. Go early in the day if you can; midweek is quieter than weekends. It's not spectacular enough to warrant a special trip from miles away, but if you're already camping nearby, it's exactly the sort of unmanicured woodland that makes a holiday feel proper and unhurried.
