Grattons Park Local Nature Reserve sits just outside Crawley and feels like the sort of place locals have been quietly enjoying for years without much fanfare. It's a small but genuine patch of woodland and grassland - the kind of reserve that rewards a proper look rather than a quick walk-through.

You'll find typical Surrey woodland here: mature trees, undergrowth, and in the right season, wildflowers along the grassier sections. Birdwatchers get the most from it, especially in spring and early summer when you might spot woodpeckers and various warblers. It's also decent for a gentle ramble if you're staying at Long Acres Caravan & Camping Park nearby, though I'd not recommend banking a whole afternoon on it - more of a one-to-two-hour outing.

The reserve works well for families with older kids who can handle uneven paths without grumbling. Younger children might find it a bit samey unless they're mad about insects or birds. Dog walkers use it regularly, which tells you something about its accessibility.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water. The best time is May through July when wildlife is most active. Being free and only five miles from your caravan park, it's worth a morning visit if you're basing yourself at Long Acres or the glamping site - a nice break from busier attractions in the area without any faffing about with entrance fees.
