Grassy Copse

The woodland around Grassy Copse, just outside Southampton, is proper New Forest territory - all gnarled oaks and open glades where ponies wander without much concern for the footpaths. It's a working forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means you get the real thing: muddy in winter, golden in autumn, and genuinely quiet once you're past the car park.

Walkers will find decent trails threading through here, nothing too demanding but enough variety to spend a couple of hours without backtracking. The ground undulates enough to keep things interesting, and there are patches of open heath where the canopy opens up. Kids under ten might flag after 90 minutes unless they're the type to pocket stones and hunt for ferns.

If you're camping at Lepe Beach Campsite - a short walk away - this forest is an easy morning option before heading to the coast. The area works well as part of a wider New Forest loop, though it's less famous than some of the bigger attractions closer to Lyndhurst. Come on a weekday if possible; weekends pull families from Southampton looking for a quick woodland fix.

The main thing to manage expectations: it's a bit of a secret because it's genuinely unremarkable in the best way. No visitor centre, no themed trails, just woods. That's exactly why it works. Worth the detour if you're already in the area and fancy stretching your legs without the crowds.
