Granny's House

The stones at Granny's House near Skipton are about as enigmatic as Bronze Age archaeology gets in Yorkshire. This is a proper ancient site - a circle of standing stones that's been here roughly 4,000 years, give or take a century or two. You walk out into moorland and there they are, weathered and patient, doing what they've always done.

What strikes you first is how utterly exposed it feels. No visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no crowds either. Just you and the landscape and the stones themselves, which is exactly how many people prefer their archaeology. If you're the type who gets a genuine thrill from being near something genuinely old and still not fully understood, this delivers. Children might find it interesting for about twenty minutes - it's not a hands-on experience - but walkers and history obsessives will appreciate the quiet drama of the place.

The site is free to visit and frankly, that's about all anyone really knows. There's no formal opening hours because it's just... there, exposed to the elements year-round. Bring proper boots and weather-appropriate kit; the moorland can turn on you quickly. Allow an hour if you're walking from the nearby villages, longer if you're combining it with other Bronze Age sites in the area.

If you're based at Breaks Fold Farm Glamping just down the road or Brown Bank Caravan Park, this makes an excellent half-day excursion. It's the kind of stop that punctuates a proper Yorkshire moorland holiday rather than dominates it. Worth the detour, but don't expect tourism infrastructure.
