Grangehill

The walk up Grangehill from Burntisland takes about twenty minutes if you're not dawdling, and you'll spend most of it climbing through woodland before the trees open out onto proper views across the Firth of Forth. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a rounded hill, really - but the effort rewards you with sight lines that stretch from Edinburgh's skyline to the Kingdom of Fife rolling away behind you.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the steep bits tedious. The path is well-trodden and fairly clear, though muddy patches are inevitable even after dry spells. Budget ninety minutes for the round trip if you're pausing to take photos and actually enjoy the view rather than just bag the summit.

There's no admission charge and facilities are minimal - just a car park at the base - so go early if the weather looks promising. Summer mornings are best, when the Forth glimmers properly and you can see for miles. Winter's often clearer but bleaker.

If you're staying at Pettycur Bay Holiday Park or Sandhills just down the road, this makes an ideal morning walk before lunch. It's close enough that you're not spending half the day driving, but far enough away that you feel like you've properly done something. The nearby parks sit right on the coast, so you could easily combine a Grangehill walk with a beach stomp afterwards - that's the way to make a proper day of it.
