Grange Wood

Grange Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Swadlincote, the sort of place that sneaks up on you if you're not paying attention but rewards a proper visit once you find it. The forest floor is thick with moss and leaf litter, and there's genuine woodland atmosphere here rather than the manicured feel you get at some country estates. You're walking through mixed trees - oak, beech, hazel - with paths that wind through in a way that feels genuinely exploratory rather than sign-posted to death.

It's ideal for families with older kids or anyone who just wants to stretch their legs without committing to a full day hike. An hour to ninety minutes is realistic, depending on whether you dawdle or just crack on. The paths are manageable but not all flat, so decent shoes are worth the effort. Early morning or late afternoon light filters through the canopy beautifully, so photography types will find something to work with.

If you're staying at Conkers Camping just down the road, this is a convenient add-on rather than a destination in itself. It's the kind of walk you do because you're already in the area with Swadlincote nearby, not because you've specifically travelled across the Midlands for it. That said, if you want genuine woodland without crowds or visitor centres, it delivers. The quietness is actually the point. Pair it with Fire & Stars if you want something more rugged for an overnight - the contrast between forest walking and woodland camping makes for a decent couple of days in Leicestershire.
