Grange Scar

The walk up Grange Scar isn't long, but it's steep enough to catch you out if you're not prepared. From Appleby-in-Westmorland, you're looking at a proper hike to reach the summit, and honestly, it's the kind of climb where you'll feel your legs on the way down more than the way up.

What you get for the effort is a genuine fell-top experience without needing to commit to something massive like Cross Fell. The views across the Eden Valley and towards the Pennines are the real draw here - on a clear day you can see properly far. It's not a spectacle in the Instagram sense, but it's the kind of landscape that reminds you why the Lake District fringe is worth exploring.

Walkers will find this rewarding. Families with young kids might struggle with the gradient unless they're seasoned hikers. The local limestone and moorland terrain gives it a different feel from the heavily trafficked peaks further west, and you're unlikely to bump into crowds even in summer. Allow a couple of hours there and back from the base, depending on your pace.

If you're camping at Wild Rose Holiday Park nearby, this makes a brilliant half-day walk without needing to drive far. It sits nicely in a broader Pennine walking itinerary - you could pair it with gentler riverside walks around Appleby itself. Best tackled in decent weather; the exposed top isn't pleasant in heavy cloud.
