Granby Wood

Walk into Granby Wood and you'll understand why locals keep coming back - it's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. This Nottinghamshire woodland sits just outside Nottingham proper, offering proper forest trails rather than manicured park paths. The trees are mature and dense enough that you'll feel properly away from things, even when the city's only a few miles south.

The wood itself is straightforward: winding trails through mixed woodland, plenty of shade, and the kind of quiet that makes you wonder why you don't do this more often. It's excellent for walkers who want a real forest experience without needing to drive halfway across England. Families with kids will manage fine here - the paths are generally decent underfoot, though muddy patches appear after rain. You won't need more than a couple of hours unless you're the type to sit on a log with a thermos.

There's nothing fancy here, and that's rather the point. No tea shops, no visitor centre, no crowds fighting for Instagram angles. Just woods being woods. It works brilliantly as a half-day outing, particularly if you're based at Janson Fishery Caravan & Camping nearby - a five-minute drive gets you back to base for lunch.

Go when the light's decent, so autumn and late spring work best. Winter's muddy and spring can be boggy, but you'll have fewer people around. The main question isn't whether to visit - it's whether you'll actually carve out time for it between your park routine.
