Goyt Valley

The Goyt Valley cuts through the Peak District like someone's drawn a proper line through the landscape - steep moorland sides, a river threading through the bottom, and views that stretch for miles if you pick the right vantage point. You're looking at classic Derbyshire scenery: open moorland, conifer plantations, and the kind of walking terrain that rewards a bit of effort.

This is walker territory, full stop. The valley offers everything from casual riverside strolls near Buxton to serious moorland hikes that'll take you half a day. The river itself - the Goyt - is the real draw, particularly around Ferncliffe Wood where it gets properly scenic. Most people spend between two and four hours here depending on whether you're doing a gentle amble or a longer circuit.

It's free to access, which is the first good sign. Bring proper boots though - the paths can be boggy, especially after rain, and some sections are genuinely steep. The moorland side gets exposed quickly, so weather matters.

Buxton's your base town, just a handful of miles away, and it's well-served by the caravan parks - Lime Tree and the Buxton Club site are both within easy reach. This works brilliantly as a day trip from either, and honestly it's the kind of place you'll want to return to because the valley changes entirely depending on light and season. Summer's busier but drier. Winter's quieter and moodier. Both have their appeal.
