Goyt Hey Wood

The woodland around Goyt Hey offers a proper escape from Skelmersdale's edges, though you need to manage expectations. This isn't a marked visitor destination with facilities - it's a working forest where you can actually walk without meeting crowds. The trees are mature, the paths are decent underfoot, and there's genuine quiet here, which counts for plenty in Lancashire.

Walkers will get the most from it. The woodland floor is thick with moss and leaf litter, the kind of place where you notice bird calls and the smell of earth. It's not dramatic scenery - no vistas, no dramatic slopes - but it's solid countryside that feels removed from the suburban pressure cooker nearby. You could easily spend an hour or so wandering, maybe two if you're the type to stop and observe.

There's no charge to access it, and no facilities that I could find, so bring what you need. Spring's probably loveliest when the woodland floor comes alive, though autumn has its own appeal. Summer can feel close and damp under the canopy.
