Gosford Green

Gosford Green is a proper nature reserve just outside Coventry, and it's the sort of place that rewards a slow morning walk rather than a quick dash around. You'll find woodland paths threading through mixed habitat - trees, grassland, ponds - all managed to encourage wildlife. Birdwatchers get genuinely excited about it; the variety's legitimately good for a midlands reserve, and you stand a decent chance of spotting something interesting if you're patient and know what you're looking for. Families with young kids will find the walks manageable, though it's not a sensational adventure playground sort of spot - more of a gentle potter. The paths are okay underfoot on most days, though it gets a bit bog-standard after rain. Allow an hour or so if you're not rushing, longer if you've got binoculars and identification books. There's something quite nice about the fact it's not choked with visitors. If you're staying at Hollyfast Caravan Park or the excellent Avon Wild Camping just a handful of miles away, it's worth a morning visit before heading into Coventry proper, or as a quieter alternative to whatever else you had planned. It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly the sort of local nature reserve that makes a caravan holiday richer - the kind of place you remember more for how it felt than what you 'did' there.
